Which direction should you sleep in?

The single most common question we get, and the one where the traditional answer and the practical answer usually agree.

Of everything in Vastu, sleep direction is the correction people are most willing to make. It costs nothing, it takes ten minutes, and unlike most changes to a house it is completely reversible. That alone makes it a good place to start.

The traditional guidance is straightforward: sleep with your head to the south, or failing that, to the east. Head to the north is discouraged, and head to the west is considered acceptable but unremarkable. The reasoning given in the classical texts is magnetic — the body has its own polarity, and aligning your head with the earth’s southern pole is said to settle rather than agitate.

You do not have to accept that explanation to find the advice useful. What we notice in practice is simpler: the south wall of a room is usually the one without a window, without a door, and without a radiator. Putting the head of the bed against it tends to mean a darker, quieter, less draughty sleeping position — and people sleep better for reasons that have nothing to do with magnetism.

The north-head position is the one worth actually avoiding, and here the practical and traditional reasons also converge. In most homes the north wall carries the largest windows, because that is where the softest light comes from. Sleeping with your head under a window means light, noise and temperature swings hitting you at the point where you are least able to ignore them.

If your room only permits one arrangement, do not tear the room apart over it. Sleep direction matters, but it matters less than the bedroom being in the right zone of the house to begin with — which is a question about the south-west, and a longer conversation.
